Undoubtedly the Romans did a great deal for civilization, and nowhere is this more evident that in the sprawling white town of Cártama. A visitor to the area cannot fail to be impressed by the ruined hilltop fortress, but just imagine how much more impressive the fortress must have appeared when it was first built, back in its Roman heyday. It was a forbidding castle that offered protection both to the town, stretched out below and the river valley beyond.
Prior to the building of the fortress, it was the Phoenicians who first explored the area by sailing up the river, and founding the settlement they names ‘Cartha' (meaning ‘concealed city'). The Romans followed them and in 195 BC they decided to rename the town 'Carthima' to reflect its place in the Roman Empire. Carthima became a renowned centre for processing marble and a popular trading town. People traded the wealth of raw minerals they extracted from the hills and mountains in the area. Before long Carthima was both wealthy and fashionable, noted for its fine Roman baths and villas, and magnificent statues of Mars and Venus.
These days Cártama – just a short drive from the Costa del Sol - stands at the head of the Rio Guadalhorce, which is a quite stunning iron bridge known as the Puente Verde or Puente de Hierro that spans the river and connects the main town with Estacion de Cartama.
Roman communications mainly relied on messengers – either runners or men on horseback. Of course back in the day there was no such thing as electricity, Wi-Fi or cable. Understandably, while the Romans left us the roots of modern language, they didn't have much to offer in the way of broadband.
If you feel like your broadband connection is the slowest on the Costa del Sol, or if you think you've inherited something that the Ancient Romans left behind, then you might want to test your broadband speed. If your broadband speed is lacking and you want to get connected to the rest of the modern world more quickly, then it's time to call in The Sky Doctor and ask about 4G internet in Cártama.
