The word that best summarises Estepona is probably 'active'. Estepona is one of those wonderful Costa del Sol towns where there always seems to be something to do. It's a popular tourist resort of course because it has excellent beaches, a wonderful marina, eight golf courses, seven museums and enough interesting sights to ensure that it never becomes boring.
The eight golf courses in Estepona all offer world-class facilities, but if you want to take a break from putting, you can always try horse-riding. Estepona has its own horse riding centre – the Costa del Sol Equestrian Centre where you can learn to ride and hire horses.
Alternatively you might want to try something a little less strenuous. Well Estepona has you covered too. There are almost a dozen spas, hydrotherapy and thalassotherapy centres, and while most of them belonging to the deluxe hotels – you're welcome to make an appointment to chill out and pamper yourself.
You can top your tan up or try any number of water sports at any of the 17 beaches, and of course with a 3km-long sea promenade, you'll have dozens of opportunities for eating or drinking close to the water's edge. Many of the numerous street cafes and tapas bars in the town itself, still serve traditional Spanish delicacies and if you wind your way up the steep, cobbled, narrow streets – which were built for horses and oxen rather than cars - you'll also find some quirky and unusual shops and bodegas where you'd least expect them.
You can't miss the Church of Virgen de los Remedios as it is the main religious building in Estepona. The Church has a vaulted nave and two aisles, a transept crowned by a dome, a huge tower and a beautiful rococo façade. The nearby Clock Tower used to be part of a fifteenth-century parish church, and was renovated in the nineteenth century.
Also a 'must see', is the San Luis Castle, which was built as a reinforcement of the wall enclosing Estepona in the sixteenth century. Razed to the ground by the French army in 1810, only the ruins remain but you can spot the seven watchtowers raised in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
