The thing about moving to Costa del Sol is that you can slow your life right down. You know how it is. In your old life you felt like you were being dragged from pillar to post, that you were at the beck and call of all and sundry, fulfilling their demands while never having your needs met. It's no surprise at all then that you decided to up sticks and move to somewhere a bit less lively.
It's not that La Cala is the party capital of the Costa del Sol or anything like that, it’s just that you find yourself being so incredibly active these days. The big difference is of course that you prefer to spend more time out of doors than was once the case. Well, the weather is sublime and you were never one to let a blue sky go to waste.
Situated between Fuengirola to the east, and Marbella to the west, La Cala, forming part of the Municipality of Mijas in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, has a population of over 24,000 inhabitants. There's plenty to interest tourists but of course it's set up for municipal services for the local residents too, and has facilities such as health centres, schools, museums and a library.
La Cala was previously known as "La Cala del Moral" meaning the Bay of Mulberries, because there were a large number of mulberry trees growing in the area. However, during the 1960s the name was changed to La Cala de Mijas because people were becoming confused with a rather similar sounding town - Cala del Moral situated just outside Málaga. Originally La Cala was just a settlement of 30 whitewashed fishermen's cottages, with a couple of bars, an open-air summer cinema, a butcher's, a grocer's, a small chapel, a school and little else of note. It was typically Andalusian. Now there is an urbanisation of premium housing and a variety of residents.
There is still evidence of the older settlement of La Cala. The presence of the castle tower at Mijas is a good example. La Cala was once a place of defence and was thus fortified with four towers along the coast. The towers existed in order to give notice of the presence of enemy ships to the garrisons of Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Marbella, because the Berbers from North Africa liked to attack this part of Spain.
