Given that Málaga is – in places – not considered the most attractive of Spanish cities, and given its location on the Costa del Sol and its general busyness – it may sometimes be a mystery why people choose to live there. The thing is Málaga is an awesome city, both ancient and modern, and is considered one of the seats of civilization and Mediterranean culture. Today it has retained its charm and is a fascinating place to live and explore.
The Costa del Sol has been described as the place where winter never comes, and in Málaga this is true. Surrounded by nature at its finest, the area around Málaga includes bright white villages with traditional architecture, and peaceful and secluded valleys, away from the hum drum of normal life. Everywhere you look the beautiful blue sea shimmers under clear skies, quite taking your breath away.
Málaga is the capital city of the province of Malaga which is situated on the south of the Mediterranean coast, between the provinces of Granada and Cadiz, but bordering the provinces of Cordoba and Seville in the north. Málaga, known as Malaka when it was inhabited by the fearsome Phoenicians, was a large part of the economic and cultural boom of the western Mediterranean, and this continued after it was invaded by Muslims in the 8th century. During the 19th century, the city became known for its wine production, so it was only in the 20th century that tourism took off properly, with millions of people from all over the world relaxing on the sun-drenched beaches, and uncovering the varied architectural heritage of the city and region.
Inland, there are currently 15 officially protected areas that have been classified as nature reserves, natural spaces or natural landmarks around Malaga. These places can be found either in the depths of the Mediterranean or on the highest peaks of the surrounding mountains. Take some time out of your schedule to seek out the magical forests and rivers and look out for foxes, golden eagles and Spanish ibex.
