Intrinsically Spanish, Manilva is a joy to behold. Occupying a prestige location right on the coast, it's fabulous that there is little in the way of anonymous sky-scraper construction. Nowadays, tourists are starting to discover the village but fortunately the Spanish culture is strongly rooted here and there's plenty for everyone to share.
The municipality of Manilva is composed of a number of communities. The white village of Manilva itself is positioned just a few kilometres inland from San Luis de Sabinillas, a little fishing village on the coast - known as just Sabinillas for short. To the west of Sabinillas there is a quiet yachting marina named Puerto Duquesa. Duquesa has a residential area and the obligatory golf course. Also to the west is another small fishing hamlet named Castillo de la Duquesa after the castle that is located there.
The municipality basically covers an area of 35 square kilometres and houses 17,000 permanent residents and a further 14,000 who have a second home here. Tourism is a large part of the economy here, along with agriculture (mainly grapes) and fishing.
Like much of the Costa del Sol, Manilva has a chequered past and dates way back to Roman times. Today you can still see evidence of the Romans – their Sulphur baths and an Aqueduct are well preserved.
Manilva in some ways is fortunate. Tourists tend to bypass the village because it is in not on the coast road, and it is overlooked thanks to its simple unpretentiousness. This is a shame because in the autumn, there are plenty of opportunities to sample grapes and raisins or buy fresh vegetables, and during the first week of September, the blessed grapes are trodden as part of the annual festival at the Plaza de la Vendimia.
Well worth a quick visit is the Church of Santa Ana and its adjoining cemetery. The parish church was built in the 18th century and houses three naves separated by arches. There are many English names in the cemetery dating from the late 1980s and 1990s.
