If you want to live on the Costa del Sol but you're after some peace and quiet, you'll probably be very attracted to Ojén. While the village has a small population of around 2000, it hasn't really attracted as many expatriates as nearby Benahavis. It is blessed in that it has remained relatively unspoilt even though it is fairly accessible.
Thanks to the Moors settling here many years ago, the name Ojén comes from the Arabic word hoxán which means "rough" or "bitter" place. This is certainly at odds with the environment today which is such a tranquil and beautiful spot. Ojén is located beside the Almadán stream, and above the valley of the rio Real. It stands at an altitude of 650ft, surrounded as it is by the Sierra Blanca and Alpujata. This unique area surrounding Ojén is rich in minerals, and the mountain ranges were mined for talc, nickel, iron and lead. This meant that the area was at the forefront of the Spanish industrial revolution during the nineteenth Century.
Ojén is split in half by the modern coastal highway. You can see on one side of the road, the newer urbanisation that rises into the hills, close to the virtually invisible and imperceptible remains of the Moorish castle that must have once grandly dominated the skyline. The castle was destroyed when the Christians took the area.
The old town is well worth a visit – it falls down the mountainside on the other side of the coastal highway, with the sea 3000 feet below. The narrow roads are cobbled and dotted with drinking fountains. You'll be able to track down the Serrania de Ronda, which is the Refugio de Juanar. Originally a private hunting lodge for the affluent Larios family, it was a much preferred sanctuary for King Alfonso XIII. It's now a hotel but is still popular with hunters, as the Serrania is still a hunting reserve. Take your camera to the general area and look out for ibex, wildcats and eagles.
