Rio Real Marbella is located to the east of Marbella. The Marbella municipality is a strip of land that extends along 27 miles of glorious coastline, sheltered to one side by the magnificent coastal mountain range. Because of the sensational views from both the North and South part of Marbella city over the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the coastline has been heavily built up. Other areas of the municipality are less urbanised, where the land has been given over to golf courses and smaller residential areas.
The recent history of Marbella is decidedly glamorous. Not so long ago, Marbella was just a small jasmine-lined village with under a 1000 residents. But when Ricardo Soriano, Marquis of Ivanrey, moved to Marbella he popularised it among his rich and famous friends. In 1943 he bought a country estate and built a resort called Venta y Albergues El Rodeo, which marked the beginning of tourism in Marbella.
It was his nephew, Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, however who really brought the glamour to Marbella. He was a descendant of a high-ranking aristocratic family with plenty of upmarket friends, who opened the Marbella Club in 1954. This was an international resort aimed at movie stars, business executives and the nobility and it attracted the very rich and the very famous, including Juan Carlos (then Prince of Asturias), Prince Rainier of Monaco and his wife Grace Kelly, Aga Khan IV and Julio Iglesias.
Rio Real Marbella is located on the eastside of Marbella, and has some of the most beautiful and scenic views you could possible wish for along the Marbella coast. It is particularly well known for golf and a large number of attractive residential areas. Marbella itself is easily accessible, and just a few minutes' drive away.
Rio Real Marbella has been described as one of Marbella's top residential locations thanks to the spectacular scenery around the area. There is a little river, which gives the area its name, which sweetly meanders towards the sea. You'll find a number of fabulous blue flag beaches along the coastline, with numerous excellent chiringuito beach bars, seafood restaurants and several exclusive beach clubs - the Trocadero Arena and La Cabâne.
Look for the nearby Torre Río Real, which is a stone watchtower, and part of a network of coastal lookouts. These were historically used to warn residents about attacks from Barbary Corsairs. The watchtower is 11 metres high and 22 metres wide. Built in 1575, this local landmark has been declared a Site of Cultural Heritage.
