Just 10 kilometres west of Marbella you will find the San Pedro de Alcántara urbanisation. It is perfectly situated – just close enough to the big city so that all the facilities and amenities you could wish for are close at hand, while simultaneously is it a few minutes' drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range. Estepona is also just 20 km away and well worth visiting.
Once upon a time San Pedro de Alcántara was an ancient farming community, famous only for its sugar cane. Nowadays it is a draw for tourists and expats but it is a refreshingly unspoilt pueblo with an appeal that is all its own and does not rely on Marbella.
The central plaza is of course the best place to start your wanderings. It has a gorgeous little parish church, and then all around you are intriguing narrow streets, packed to the brim with fascinating small shops, pavement cafes and bars. Visit on a Thursday and you'll be able to see the street market with all its hustle and bustle. Great for bargains!
A walk along the beach front in the sunshine is a fabulous way to continue your day. Stroll from the centre of town to the beachfront along the Avenida del Marques del Duero - an attractive wide avenue lined with shady palm trees. The modern promenade along the beach is nice and wide and perfect for walking, cycling or skateboarding. You can stop off at any one of the numerous chiringuitos for lunch, as many specialise in fresh fish dishes, or if you only want a drink there are plenty of bars around.
Due to its size, the beach never gets crowded, and you'll be super impressed by the excellent high standards of cleanliness and first-rate facilities that are often recognised by the Blue Flag award. There is a Red Cross first aid post and plenty of cafes and restaurants so you'll never be stuck if you
A must see if you're in the area is the La Basilica de Vega del Mar. This was an early Christian church and necropolis (burial site). It is located in the heart of a eucalyptus forest by the Guadalmina river, between San Pedro de Alcántara and Marbella. The site houses the unique and expansive remains of the Basilica including its foundations and evidence of the burial site. It has limited opening times on Fridays.
