Sotogrande is a privately owned residential development in Andalusia, one of the largest of its kind. It began life as a gated community, handily situated in San Roque, Cádiz, Spain. It is large – composed as it is of an 8 mile square stretch of land. It reaches from the Mediterranean Sea, just 25 km east of Gibraltar, right back into the foothills of Sierra Almenara. Residents have the spectacular contrast between the glistening views of the sparkling blue Mediterranean in front of them and the undulating hills, and fresh cork forests behind them.
The urbanization is home to a number of artificial lakes, perfect landscaping and - not forgetting of course - access to a number of golf courses with their emerald green fairways. There are five golf courses, including the world-famous Valderrama, created by Jaime Ortiz-Patiño and the San Roque course. The architecture varies in style from the traditional Andalusian to mid-twentieth century modern, all the way through to 21st century contemporary design.
Sotogrande was first established thanks to the largesse of Joseph Rafael McMicking e Ynchausti and Mercedes Zobel de Ayala y Roxas. Having fallen in love with the idyllic coastline of the Costa del Sol, the Zobels bought five neighbouring farms in 1962. They decided they wanted to establish a luxurious residential development overlooking the Mediterranean. They succeeded! In fact in 2006, The Times featured Sotogrande as having the most expensive homes in Europe.
However, the jet set are rightly attracted to the area. Sotogrande's irresistible appeal lies in the natural beauty of the site, enhanced by the early landscaping, planting of avenues of palm and conifer trees, underground infrastructure and wide, two-lane roads.
Sotogrande has attracted a number of celebrity residents over the years, and even today a few of the richest and most powerful families of Spain have summer homes here. Names you may recognise as inhabitants of Sotogrande include Sir Peter Caruana, former Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Tony Blair, Emilio Botín, Ana Rosa Quintana, Royal Shakespeare Company actor Mike Gwilym, and HRH Prince Louis Alphonse, Duke of Anjou, the legitimist pretender to the throne of France. The financial status of the residents of the urbanization has meant that property prices have remained stable in the area, and even increased in many cases, in spite of the recent global downturn in property prices.
