Torremolinos is one of those places that everyone has heard of, but not many people actually know intimately. Once upon a time it was the butt of jokes and comedy sketches, but these days it has evolved into a mature and attractive holiday resort with beautiful clean and sandy beaches and a wide variety of entertainment. In Torremolinos there is something for everyone.
Torremolinos is ideally located and this explains its early appeal for holidaymakers. It is just 7km west of Málaga airport and so this sleepy little fishing village was the first Costa del Sol resort to be developed back in the early 1960s. You can still spot elements of the town's early heritage because a few of the original fresh fish bars are located right in the shopping centre – although these days they jostle for space alongside trendy boutiques and gift shops.
Of course, successive waves and generations of tourists have changed the essential character of Torremolinos for ever, and during the season, the town has a hectic nightlife and attracts a mainly young crowd. Out of season, however, Torremolinos is very different. The atmosphere becomes much more Spanish, especially at weekends, and visitors are met with a friendly welcome.
Take a walk towards La Carihuela to take in the gorgeous sea views and dramatic rock formations, and before long you will enter the old fishing village. This is a simply delightful area of picturesque houses and bougainvillea clad patios. You'll see old men playing dominoes and drinking anis and watching the world go by. Many of the original cottages still exist here because thankfully not all of them have been turned into bars or shops. In some places, the little village has stood still in time. Wander around the area early one morning before the tourists wake up and you'll see a whole different world. If you come here in the evening you will find a lovely selection of excellent seafood restaurants and chiringuitos.
Similarly, the area of El Calvario is less well known among tourists. You'll find it to the north of the main road which cuts through Torremolinos, where it offers a quieter selection of small streets of bars, which should appeal to those who prefer to be away from the bustle of the centre.
